4 Common Pains Impacted by Sleep
Sleep is vitally important to your health – it has an impact on your overall lifestyle in so many ways. Productivity, creativity, awareness, emotional health and physical health are all impacted by the quantity and quality of sleep you get. According to the National Sleep Foundation, pain-related sleep loss is a problem that impacts millions of Americans. Sleep disruptions and poor sleep quality can be attributed to various types of pain. We’ve outlined a few here.
Back Pain
Symptoms of back pain can come in many forms,
including muscle aches, shooting or stabbing
pain, pain that you feel from your back down
your leg or even limited flexibility. According
to WebMD, back pain can stem from spinerelated
problems, accidents and injuries, lifestyle
triggers or emotional stress. Additionally,
Medical News Today notes that if you do not
have proper mattress support, it could lead to
back pain from sleeping.
Hip Pain
The truth is, hips don’t lie. Hip pain can cause
discomfort when you are sleeping, especially
for side sleepers. Pregnant women, who are
encouraged to sleep on their left side after the
second trimester, often experience hip pain due
to relaxed connective tissue that loosens joints
and ligaments between bones in their pelvis. Try
sleeping on your side with a pillow between your
legs to provide some pain relief.
Shoulder Pain
If you’re experiencing shoulder pain after
sleeping, a visit to your doctor may be in order,
as an injury could be the cause. In the meantime,
you may want to try using extra pillows under
your shoulders for support.
Neck Pain
We’ve all woken up with a stiff neck from
sleeping in the wrong position. But if you are
experiencing ongoing neck pain from sleeping,
your pillow could be to blame. Your pillows make
up 25% of your sleeping surface, so you want to
be sure that you are using cushion that supports
the natural curve of your neck. Your pillow
should allow you to keep your body aligned with
your bed as you sleep. With so many options –
feather, gel, foam, fluffy and flat – the right pair
of pillows is out there for you.
