TEMPUR-PEDIC® MATTRESSES

Tempur-Pedic® mattresses have been on beds since 1992. Mattresses manufactured by the Tempur- Pedic® brand are designed to meet most standard bed and frame size dimensions. The TEMPUR® material used in the mattresses contours to the body, helping to minimize stress on pressure points, like hips and shoulders.2

TEMPUR-PEDIC® MATTRESSES TYPES

The current line of Tempur-Pedic® mattresses comes in four types, each designed to meet different levels of firmness and comfort3:

TEMPUR-Flex®

A more responsive mattress made to adapt to the body while feeling like a typical spring mattress.

TEMPUR-Contour™

The most firm of the four mattress types from Tempurpedic, designed to provide support and pressure relief.

TEMPUR-Cloud®

The softest type from Tempur-Pedic®, geared toward comfort and support.

TEMPUR-Breeze®

Features cooling technology along with plush comfort and support.

Like Tempur-Pedic®, other mattress brands, such as Serta and Eclipse, offer a range of comfort options, ranging from firm mattresses offering the most support, to pillow top mattresses for the softest comfort, with plush mattresses splitting the difference between the two.

IS TEMPUR-PEDIC® MATERIAL THE SAME AS MEMORY FOAM?

Memory foam, after being developed by NASA to improve the safety of cushions in air and spacecraft in the mid-1960s, became commercially available for use in the early 1980s. While TEMPUR® material was one of the first commercial uses of memory foam, since that time most mattress companies have developed their own similar technologies. While each manufacturer’s foam is slightly different, most function in the same way.4 Other brands that offer memory foam mattresses include the following:

TEMPUR-PEDIC® VS. OTHER MATTRESSES

  • Hampton and Rhodes cool gel memory foam mattresses combine a layer of cooling memory foam with high-density support foam at the base.6
  • The affordable Dream Bed has multiple foam layers and a core support system.7
  • Easy Rest Slumber Pedic® mattresses feature multiple foam layers with differing densities for proper spinal alignment.8
  • Classic Brands Morgan memory foam mattresses utilize the combination of a high-performance support base and a premium memory foam layer to increase circulation for sleepers.9

BENEFITS & FEATURES OF TEMPUR-PEDIC® AND OTHER MEMORY FOAM MATTRESSES

A benefit of memory foam and gel memory foam mattresses is the even distribution of body weight during sleep, which may reduce stress on pressure points, especially around the shoulders and hips, and help with spinal alignment throughout the night.

Memory foam’s conforming qualities also help retain heat, which can be good and bad. Some customers have found that the additional heat helps relieve pain, while other customers have found that the extra heat is uncomfortable.12

MEMORY FOAM TEMPUR-PEDIC® MATTRESS LAYERS

Memory foam mattresses are generally composed of three layers of foam, plus a cooling layer and a fabric cover. TEMPUR® mattresses, like other brands’ gel memory foam and memory foam mattresses, generally feature a base layer, a support layer, and a comfort layer.13
