2015 Holiday Gift Guide: Gifts That Give Back
This Holiday Season BOGO Has A Whole New Meaning
Traditionally, the phrase BOGO has stood for “buy-one-get-one” – essentially, you get two for the price of one. This is all well and good when you’re working your way through your holiday shopping list, but what if you want it all to mean something more? After all, ‘tis the Season of Giving, not Getting. This year, your holiday shopping dollars can stretch ever farther by considering products offering a different kind of BOGO: buy-one-give-one.
9 Holiday Gift Ideas That Give Back
I’ve rounded up nine of the best holiday buy-one-give-one and/or charitable gift ideas at every price point; and the best part – these gifts will make more than one person smile this holiday season.
The Gap x Bombas:
Did you know homeless shelters are traditionally in greater need of sock donations than any other item of clothing? Bombas and Gap are teaming up this season to stock homeless shelters with socks with their #SOCKSFORALL campaign. They’re collaborating with the National Coalition for the Homeless and Good360, promising to donate a pair of socks for every regular-priced pair purchased. I’m loving the cozy Gap x Bombas calf socks for the perfect stocking stuffer ($10.95)
Warby Parker is taking the old "teach a man to fish" proverb to heart. Each pair of specs purchased goes toward a monthly donation to help support organizations that train men and women in developing countries to give eye exams and sell glasses. My picks: The Barkley in Antique Shale Fade ($95) for him, and the Ripley in Oak Barrel ($145) for her
Starbucks' seasonal red cups are becoming synonymous with the holidays, so why not add a little caffeine boost to your gift list? In a yearlong program to help aid farmers in Central America whose livelihoods have been compromised by a rust fungus, Starbucks has pledged to donate a coffee tree for every bag of coffee purchased at one of its 7,400 U.S. company-owned locations. Try the Veranda Blend for a smooth, mild coffee that appeals to coffee rookies and connoisseurs alike ($11.95)
Of course, I couldn’t have a “gifts-that-give-back” gift guide without including the original one for one company. Toms is famous for its shoes, but I’m loving their STANDUP backpack line. For every backpack purchased, Toms promises to help stop bullying “one youth at a time.” My pick: the Multi Chevron-Printed STANDUP Backpack ($26.99)
Creative Kidstuff gives the “power of play” to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have access to quality toys. Creative Kids partners with Sensational Beginnings, GreaterGood and Soles4Souls to donate and distribute toys and clothing to children across the globe. Every purchase made supports this cause, and I love the Musical Super Skipper for when my little ones have cabin fever in the winter months ($40.00)
The baby accessories brand is partnering with Babies“R”Us to help moms in need. So far, Boppy has donated $250,000 worth of Boppy Pillows through the Nurse-Family Partnership, an organization that supports and educates moms-in-need. My personal favorite: The Boppy Heirloom Pillow in Gray Whale ($49.99) – I can’t resist the adorable momma and baby whale embellishment and chic reversible chevron pattern!
Founded by actress and singer/songwriter Caitlin Crosby, these chic trinkets are meant to be passed from wearer-to-wearer inspiring hope and encouragement to those who need it most. 10 percent of the funds from sales of Classic Necklaces engraved with the word HOPE ($39.00) are donated to the Giving Keys’ nonprofit partner Chrysalis.
The Dream Bed:
Every child deserves to dream of dancing sugar plums in their own bed. That’s why Mattress Firm’s Dream bed in a box promises to give one twin bed to a child or family in need for every Dream mattress purchased. Dream partners with local nonprofits to improve sleep conditions across the country. My pick: I can’t choose! I love both our Dream beds because they’re helping someone in need sleep happy, but if you’re typically warm at night, the Cool Dream Bed is the way to go (starts at $699)
Jam in style while supporting a good cause with a pair of LSTN headphones. The hip headphone and earbud brand donates a portion of its profits to the Starkey Hearing Foundation, an organization that funds hearing aid products and generates awareness of hearing health. My pick: the Cherry Wood Troubadours ($149)
At Mattress Firm, giving back is at the heart of our brand. It brings us together as a team and connects us with the communities in which we live and work. That’s why this holiday season, I’m shopping with intention.
