Mattress Firm Employee Spotlight: Michael Billet

At Mattress Firm, we appreciate all of our team members who serve their local communities with tremendous customer service and great product knowledge. Recognized as one of the best places to work in the US, we're also proud to support our employees as they pursue their dreams through volunteering, higher education, or growing their own families.

Mike Billett joined the Mattress Firm family in the Cleveland area just over 2 years ago, and is currently the area manager in the Cleveland/Youngstown district. Recently, he was recognized in a huge way the National Retail Federation selected Mike to be one of only 20 recipients of their 5th Annual Dream BIG Scholarship, awarding him a full-tuition scholarship toward any degree at the University of Phoenix. We caught up with Mike and learned more about his plans for the scholarship and his experience working with Mattress Firm in Ohio.

What is the first thing you ask a customer when they walk in your store?

I always ask, “Is this the first time you've been in a Mattress Firm?" This opens up the conversation of how their previous experience was.

What kinds of work do you do in your community?

Last year, I assisted local police departments in Hermitage and Boardman (as well as the Hermitage fire department) with fundraising opportunities. I also am involved with local car groups who meet up each week to show off their latest upgrades.

Tell us about your family.

My father is originally from Boardman, Ohio where we currently live and my mother from Caracas, Venezuela. My younger brother is studying computer science at Youngstown State University. My brother and I were born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida but my dad had a couple of job opportunities that brought us up to Virginia and then here. We are a typical family that enjoys sports games, playing cards and dominoes. We often get together with my grandparents, aunts and uncles for weekend dinners.

What are your plans for the Dream BIG scholarship?

The NRF scholarship is a 100% full ride scholarship toward any degree you'd like, including a Master's degree if the recipient had a bachelors previously. I graduated Youngstown State University with a Criminal Justice Degree that I'd planned to use as a pre-law degree to prepare me for law school. But, I've since changed my mind about pursuing law school and will pursue my MBA, with a focus in project management. I'd like to use my newly acquired knowledge and my years of experience to help better improve the efficiency, effectiveness and performance of Mattress Firm so that we can even better serve our customers in Ohio and around the country.

Congratulations, Mike! We look forward to watching you continue your education, and we're proud to have you as part of our Mattress Firm family.
