Welcome to Our New BEDQuarters: GONZO247

Earlier this week, we were thrilled to tell you about some of the features of Mattress Firm's new BEDQuarters. Today, we want to show you an extra special aspect of our office location that connects us to our hometown.

Houston Artist GONZO247

We love the city of Houston and we really wanted our new workspace to include something unique to our hometown. So, we enlisted the help of GONZO247 (Mario E. Figueroa, Jr.), a local graffiti artist who was born and raised here, to give our offices something a uniquely H-Town aesthetic. We're thrilled that he decided to make our sparkling clean Mattress Firm offices a little dirty.

GONZO is a fantastic painter who has been creating art locally and internationally since 1985. His distinctive street-style can be seen all around Houston, including at the Houston Zoo, the Downtown Public Library parking garage, Saint Arnold Brewery, NCAA Final Four venues, and Williams Tower.  GONZO is the founder of both the Graffiti & Street Art Museum of Texas and the Houston Urban Experience Mural Festival, and he still finds time to serve our community by volunteering for art groups and teaching fellow artists.

H-Town Proud

We asked Gonzo247 a few questions about his work and his love for our city.

MFRM: What is your favorite place in Houston?

GONZO: Can I say the BEDQuarters? (laughs) Wow, there’s so many. If you want something good to eat, Star Pizza is really good, that’s homegrown. I’ve got to give a shout-out to Ninfa’s on Navigation Blvd. – there’s so many places. There is so much cool stuff to do in Houston, we don’t have enough time for all of it.

MFRM: What would you say makes your pieces unique?

GONZO: Probably all of the color that I use. As you can tell, I’m a very bright and colorful person. If you say I have 30 colors that I can use, I use 60. I just love colors and try to embed all that I can in all of my pieces.

MFRM: What was your inspiration for this piece?

GONZO: I was born and raised here in H-town – Houston was the main inspiration. I’m probably overly Houston proud; I just love this city so much and I know every crevice of it. I like to represent that in a lot of the murals that I paint – the things that make Houston a really unique place to visit.

MFRM: Where do you go to find inspiration on a regular basis?

GONZO: Anywhere in the city. I tend to grab inspiration from my surroundings and my environment, so it doesn’t matter where I’m at. You cannot NOT be inspired in Houston.
