Mattress Firm Celebrates 30 Years
Today, as we celebrate the founding of our nation, Mattress Firm also celebrates 30 years of helping people sleep better. On July 4, 1986, three bold businessmen each scraped together $5,000 to open the first Mattress Firm store in Houston. Steve Fendrich, Harry Roberts and Paul Stork wanted to improve the mattress buying experience, and this humble beginning would grow to become a publicly traded company with 10,000 employees nationwide. A company that I am proud and humbled to be a part of each and every day.
Mattress Firm – Changing The Way People Shop for Mattresses
30 years ago, shopping for a mattress usually meant looking through a stack of beds that were still wrapped in plastic and making your best guess. After you had made your purchase, you’d then have to wait a week or two for delivery. In Houston, for example, it usually took 12 days for a department store to deliver a mattress.
Our founders knew there was a better way. They took the plastic off of the products in the showroom and encouraged their customers to lay down on a mattress before purchase. They also introduced same-day and next-day delivery. Most importantly, they brought their passion for customer service to an often-overlooked product that people spend 1/3 of their lives sleeping on.
Still Striving To Help People Sleep Better
Today, Mattress Firm still strives to be the preferred choice for better sleep by aiming to provide excellent customer service for the guests that visits our stores. For 30 years, our passion to improve their lives through better sleep has driven everything we do.
I started my career with Mattress Firm nearly 20 years ago as a sales associate in one of our stores. I loved getting to know our customers and our community. Over the years, my responsibilities with the company have changed, but I can honestly say that I’m still passionate about improving lives. I sincerely believe that helping a person sleep better has the power to improve their health and overall quality of life, and this belief motivates me to work hard to grow our company and help more people.
I’m especially proud of the fact that our company has become an employer of choice – a business that attracts and retains top talent that shares core values of customer service, community and culture. Mattress Firm was recently recognized on Forbes‘ list of “America’s Best Employers 2016,” an unexpected and humbling honor.
Back in 1986, it was nothing short of innovative to take the plastic off and let people try a mattress before investing in one. We still believe that the best way to purchase a mattress is to discuss your sleep needs with a knowledgeable, friendly sleep expert and lay down on a variety of beds to try them out. Since our founding, Mattress Firm has been propelled by our passion for the communities and customers we serve, and we look forward to continuing to help people to sleep happy for the next 30 years!
