Mere days after the rains from Hurricane Harvey stopped pouring on Southeast Texas and in our hometown of Houston, our attention turned toward our friends in Florida and the Atlantic Coast as they began to prepare for Hurricane Irma. Millions are still without power and many areas, like the Florida Keys, have seen severe damage. Having just experienced flooding and devastation, my heart broke watching the reports of those who are being impacted by this new disaster.
Just like we did in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, we have contacted our team members who live and work in affected areas. Although we’re happy that they are safe, many have reported major damage to their homes and property. We have been working quickly to step up and find ways to provide assistance to those who have suffered losses from this storm. Here are a few ways we will continue to stand by those who need our help.
- We are in contact with local organizations to determine how we can help people in the community. If you or someone you know is looking for the most up-to-date information on our relief efforts, we’re constantly updating our disaster relief website with the latest news from our nonprofit partners.
- The GoFundMe account that was set up to assist employees in the wake of Hurricane Harvey will remain active, and the money collected in that fundraiser will be distributed to our team members affected by either storm. Mattress Firm started this account with a donation of $25,000 and pledged to match donations up to $100,000. In order to help those affected by Hurricane Irma, we will now match up to $125,000 of donations.
- Also, we’ve expanded our enhanced PTO donation program to give those affected by Hurricane Irma the extra time they need to take care of their families and their homes. Mattress Firm employees from around the country can donate any portion of their PTO to this program to help their colleagues during this difficult time.
Thank you again for your support of our team members, neighbors and customers whose lives have been turned upside-down by these devastating natural disasters. We appreciate the words of encouragement we’ve received from all over the country and our thoughts are with those who are trying to rebuild their lives. It is with the strength and kindness of others that we all come out stronger.
