We’ve come a long way from the days of wooden pallets or cement benches, but as the technology behind mattresses continues to improve, myths increase. Sunni Goodman, Mattress Firm’s Director of Communications, puts the most common misnomers to bed.
Myth: It’s illegal to remove the tag
Truth: If you own the mattress, rip away. The tag is there for the consumer, so once you’ve purchased the mattress you can go ahead and tear the tag. That being said, manufacturers and retailers are not to remove the label, because, as required by law, it contains information for the consumer regarding filling materials. It also includes the manufacturer’s name and the date of manufacture – important information to have for warranty purposes, so if you indeed remove the label, file it away in a safe place. Most tags clearly state “Under penalty of law, this tag is not to be removed except by consumer.” Rest assured the “Mattress Police” do not exist … when it comes to the consumer, that is.
Myth: Regularly flip and rotate your mattress
Truth: These days, most mattresses shouldn’t be flipped, especially if it has a pillow-top on one side. The advanced construction of today doesn’t dictate the need for flipping, but rotating is still recommended. You can and should rotate your mattress on a regular basis, especially if there are two people sleeping in the bed and weight is distributed unevenly.
Myth: Mattresses with springs are so yesterday
Truth: Most people don’t think of technology when it comes to mattresses, but there have been a lot of advancements, even in coil springs. An innerspring mattress is still a very good choice for people who don’t like the feeling of “sinking” into a memory-foam mattress. But there’s an option now that provides both innerspring and memory foam – a hybrid model that combines the best of both.
One thing that isn’t a myth is that it’s important to replace your mattress every eight years to ensure that you’re getting the best sleep possible. Our sleep consultants are trained to help you find the best mattress for you to sleep better.
