kid getting ready for school

Morning Routine Hacks: From Toddlers to Teens

A new school year is on the horizon, and we all know what that means  early mornings are making a comeback. Getting your kids ready for the school year is hard no matter how old they are, and one of the hardest parts is getting them out of bed and out the door  bonus points, if on time  for school.

5 Ideas to Improve Your Child’s Morning Routine

School mornings shouldn’t make you feel like you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, though. Here are some simple hacks to make you and your family’s morning routine for school suck a little less:

1. Get crafty in the kitchen.

As fun as breakfast in bed can be, it delays your morning routine. Don your apron to cook up a healthy and delicious breakfast. The aroma will surely have your kids springing out of bed and running to the kitchen before you can say, “Bon appétit!”

2. Set a sleep schedule.

If your kids are used to late nights and even later mornings over the summer, it’s likely their sleep schedule will need to be adjusted. Getting a good night’s sleep doesn’t have to end with summer vacation, though. Dr. Sujay Kansagra, Mattress Firm’s sleep health expert, advises parents to move bedtimes earlier by 10 to 15 minutes each night until reaching the school bedtime goal. With just a little bit of preparation, your kids can start off the school year well-rested and ready for productive days ahead.

3. Designate a DJ of the day.

Get your family up and moving by picking a family member to be the “House DJ” for a specific weekday. Whether they have control of the AUX cord or the radio, your children will have a little more pep in their step as they transition through their morning routine.

4. Hit the (comfortable) hay.

Having a good mattress is just as important as having the right school supplies for the year. A new mattress is one way to help your children get the quality sleep they need. With Mattress Firm’s Back to School Special, you can save on one of the most proven tools for success: a good night’s rest on a comfortable mattress!

5. Practice positivity.

Mornings can get a bad rap, especially if it’s a school morning. Start your day on a positive note by encouraging your kids to look on the bright side. Not sure where to start? Ask your kids to list three things they want to learn or accomplish this school year and recap their progress over breakfast every week.

At Mattress Firm, we understand it can be difficult for students to settle into a healthy morning routine. At the end of the day, you want to prepare for a successful day at school, and the better children sleep, the better they learn. By following these routine hacks, the transition to back-to-school mornings should be a good one.
