What Are Sir John's Best Sleep Habits for Beauty and Wellness?

Beauty is often defined by what's new: a trending ingredient, a viral technique or another product to add to your routine. But after decades of working with some of the world's most recognizable faces, celebrity makeup artist Sir John has learned that lasting results have something else in common: They're built on consistency. And that includes getting good sleep, the foundation of looking and feeling your best.

We asked Sir John to share the habits he comes back to time and time again—and why what happens before your morning routine can be just as important as what you do yourself.

How Does Sir John Prepare for Better Sleep Each Night?

"The PM routine is everything," says Sir John. For him, winding down starts with a shower before moving into skincare. Just as important is knowing when to step away from technology.

"It's less about falling asleep and more about being guided into rest."

Your evening routine doesn't have to be elaborate. Whether it's reading a few pages, taking time for skincare or putting your phone away a little earlier, the goal is to build habits you can return to night after night. As Sir John puts it, "Beauty is about intention."

Why Does Your Morning Routine Actually Start the Night Before?

Most people think of a beauty routine as something that begins when they step in front of the mirror. Sir John sees it differently.

"Sleep is regeneration. It's when your body restores, your skin repairs, your mind resets."

He describes sleep as "a ritual of renewal" and one of the few uninterrupted moments you have with yourself in the day.

That's why your sleep environment matters. The mattress you sleep on, the pillow that supports you and the bedding that helps keep you comfortable.

Which is why Mattress Firm and Sir John created The Sleep Edit: Beauty Edition, a collection of mattresses, pillows, bedding and accessories selected to help support the habits that happen before your day begins.

Why Sir John Says Good Sleep Is Not a Fad?

Working at the forefront of beauty means Sir John sees new trends every day. But when it comes to his own routine, he's become more focused on the fundamentals. "Sleep is structural,” he says.

As he ages, Sir John says he pays closer attention to temperature regulation, back support and the role pillows play in keeping his body aligned.

"The way your bed is built really matters. Pillows are essential; they help prevent that arch in your back and keep your body aligned."

What Makes a Strong Bedtime Routine?

There's no one-size-fits-all approach to winding down. The best routine is the one you'll come back to consistently. As Sir John says, "Waking up well-rested shifts your entire perspective."

The routines that last are often the simplest: the ones that help you feel prepared, confident and like yourself day after day.

"I always tell people to pay attention to what works for you," he says. "Not every trend is meant to become part of your life."
