Do Essential Oils Help You Fall Asleep?

essential oils for sleep

Does your beauty sleep need a refresh? There are many ways to revitalize your sleep, but if you've exhausted all of your current options, you may find one unexpected solution could work for you: essential oils.

Many people find that using essential oils eliminates the need for sleep supplements as aromatherapy can provide relaxing and restoring benefits. Some oils even have a sedative effect that promotes sleep and can also minimize anxiety, relieve stress and lower your blood pressure.

The Mattress Firm team has pulled together some of the best essential oils to help you fall asleep fast and stay relaxed throughout the night. You can purchase these at a natural health store, local supermarkets or online.

1. Lavender

If you’re wondering what essential oils are good for sleep, you’ve likely heard a lot about lavender. Lavender oil is one of the most popular essential oils for sleep. One study showed that lavender can change your brain waves to a more relaxed state, while calming the nervous system. And, it even helps to lower blood pressure, heart rate and skin temperature according to Dr. Marlynn Wei, psychiatrist and expert contributor of Harvard Health.

You can apply lavender oil directly to your skin or place a little on your pulse points, such as your wrist or neck, right before bed. Inhale with a few deep breaths to get the full effect of the aromatherapy. And, if you’re really looking to give your bedtime routine a boost, you can also place a lavender diffuser in your bedroom, or even add a few drops to a hot bath after a long day.

2. Cedarwood

Cedarwood is a perfect essential oil to diffuse before bedtime to help you drift off to sleep. It has a woodsy, comforting scent that is proven to be effective as a sedative and also can decrease heart rate and blood pressure. Cedarwood also doubles as a sleep aid as well as an alleviant for hypertension and anxiety.

3. Roman Chamomile

Chamomile has several different uses that all promote calmness during relaxation, most commonly sipping a warm cup of chamomile tea. However, when used as an essential oil, it can fight off insomnia as well as relieve anxiety and stress. Sprinkle a few drops into a bath or a vase of water, and inhale a few deep breaths. The potent scent can calm and relax you enough to drift off into dreamland.

4. Ylang-Ylang

Native to Indonesia, ylang-ylang flowers produce an oil that can be effective in reducing hypertension with the substance’s sedative effects. The essential oil has a light floral scent that not only can help you fall asleep faster, but also provides a calming fragrance for your home.

However, ylang-ylang should not be applied directly to skin, but rather, mixed with a moisturizing lotion or a base oil, such as coconut oil.

Just like all other sleep aids and nighttime routines, what works for someone else may or may not work for you. If you are struggling to get some shut eye or just want to try new methods to promote relaxation, don’t be afraid to give essential oils a try. At the very least, you’ll get to enjoy some pleasant new scents in your home, and at best, you’re drift off into dreamland faster than ever before.

So, give essential oils and try and let us know what you think!
