Round up Your Change for Change
For many, and I can definitely say for me, Thanksgiving always prompts a time of reflection and gratitude. I'm grateful for my family, and especially for my wife who only a few months ago gave birth to our fourth child. I'm grateful for my faith and my health. And, I'm grateful to work for a company that truly cares about its employees and customers, and that makes a daily effort to give back and support those in need.
November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
As some of you may know, November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. At Mattress Firm, pancreatic cancer is a cause near and dear to our hearts. As the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States - and soon to be the second leading cause - pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of any of the major cancers, with only five percent of those affected surviving longer than five years. In 2010, it was estimated that more than 43,000 Americans were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and 36,000 of those diagnosed didn't make it to their next birthday. Pancreatic cancer is the only form of cancer that still has a single digit survival rate in the U.S., and in 40 years, the survival rate has only increased from three to six percent.
When patients research pancreatic cancer on the internet, they often walk away hopeless and discouraged. Everything out there is very bleak and provides minimal resources and information on successful treatment options. Mattress Firm is working to change that.
Mattress Firm & TGen Fighting For A Cure
Mattress Firm is following in the footsteps of our friend, Roger Magowitz, who has been a driving force behind nearly a decade of research to find a cure for pancreatic cancer, the disease that took the life of his mother. Roger has long been in the bedding industry, and is responsible for initiating Mattress Firm's involvement in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Roger was quick to inform us of the importance of funding research and raising awareness for this disease and as a result, Mattress Firm began to support The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization focused on developing earlier diagnostics and smarter treatments, specifically funding the research and clinical trials conducted by globalCure.
Mattress Firm Has Raised $1.5 Million For Pancreatic Cancer Since 2011
Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, physician-in-chief and director of translational research at TGen, believes the missing piece to cancer research funding is corporate America. Businesses completely unrelated to the healthcare industry, like Mattress Firm, provide important funding of clinical testing in TGen's search for preventions and a cure, something Dr. Von Hoff calls philanthropy-sponsored clinical trials.
Since 2011, Mattress Firm has raised more than $1.5 million to support clinical trials and equipment needs at TGen. Through our "roundup initiative" we ask our customers to round up the total cost of their Mattress Firm purchase to the nearest dollar. Every additional cent goes straight to TGen's initiatives.
One of the most common reactions to a pancreatic cancer diagnosis is "nothing can be done." What if we told you that isn't the case? What if you had access to the appropriate resources, physicians and clinical trials that would not only extend your life expectancy, but help the professionals move forward in their work to cure you of pancreatic cancer? This year, we're donating a total of $500K to TGen, and we hope you'll join us and round up your change for change!
