May is National Foster Care Month

May1_Blog_640x400

In 1988, President Reagan signed a proclamation establishing May as National Foster Care Month, a month set aside as a specific time to acknowledge the community of people who work to support foster children and their families.

When we take a step back and reflect on Mattress Firm Foster Kids and all of the children we’ve been able to help throughout this past year, we are so grateful for the huge number of people who contribute in different ways to make our work possible.

It Takes a Community

Mattress Firm Foster Kids’ tagline is “Not everyone can be a foster parent, but anyone can help a foster child.” And it’s true!

Everyone in our community plays a different role in the success of our programs, and that’s something to get excited about. It’s the collective power of everyone – community leaders, local nonprofits, CASA volunteers, foster parents, corporate sponsors, mentors, donors, and our employees – who make our program successful, and any success we have is shared among everyone who participates.

Year-Round Commitment

In fact, Mattress Firm Foster Kids is structured around being part of and supporting local communities. We host year-round collection drives for essentials like new clothing, shoes and school supplies, then distribute those items to carefully chosen local nonprofit foster care partners. Donations are collected through the Ticket to Dream Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, and after each of the six annual donation drives, proceeds stay in the community where they were donated.

Mattress Firm Foster Kids also partners with generous donors from companies and groups who host their own drives through campaigns and events.

So what are you waiting for? Join us! You can donate online or use our store locator to find the Mattress Firm location nearest you. After all, not everyone can be a foster parent, but anyone can help a foster child.

The Best Way to Spread Holiday Cheer is Giving Back to Foster Children This Year!Imagine being a child and told you’re being taken away from those you love the most. You’re given a trash bag and told to pack as many of your belongings as you can. For whatever reason, and through no fault of your own, you are now being taken to a completely new place, without many of the comforts you are used to. And now more than ever, you're uncertain of what your future holds.

Show You Care, Buy A BearMost people are familiar with the two the busiest shopping days of the year, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. During a time dominated by sales, demands for people to buy more, giveaways and doorbusters, it’s easy to get caught up in giving your time and energy to things that distract your focus from some of the true reasons for the holiday season – family, tradition and generosity.

Should You Share Your Bed With Your Dog? Top Things to Consider...When it comes to getting the best rest possible, there are many considerations, including your bed, sleep environment and night routines. But one thing you should ask yourself when it comes to getting better rest is whether or not you want to share your bed with your four-legged companion. That’s right — one of the most common questions amongst pet owners when it comes to their best sleep is: “Should I let my dog sleep in my bed?”
