A day bed brings seating and a comfortable sleep space together in one versatile piece of furniture, making it a practical choice for a guest room, home office or small bedroom. Often called a daybed, this space-saving bed typically features a back and side panels that create a sofa-like shape. Add supportive pillows for daytime lounging, then clear them away to prepare the mattress for overnight guests or everyday sleep. Many day beds accommodate a twin mattress, though dimensions and mattress requirements vary by frame. Before choosing a day bed mattress, check the frame’s interior measurements, recommended mattress thickness and support requirements rather than relying on the bed size alone. It also helps to measure your room, including doorways and walking space, so your setup feels comfortable without crowding nearby furniture. For a day bed used every night, give mattress comfort and support the same attention you would for any other bed. Choosing the right mattress for a day bed starts with how you plan to use it and who will sleep on it. Side sleepers may appreciate cushioning around the shoulders and hips, while back and stomach sleepers often benefit from a feel that helps maintain comfortable spinal alignment. Firmness preferences are personal, so consider both pressure relief and support rather than assuming one firmness works for everyone. If you are considering a day bed with a trundle, confirm the lower bed’s mattress dimensions, thickness limit and weight capacity, and leave enough floor space to extend it fully. Check whether mattresses are included and whether the frame requires a separate foundation before completing your setup. Fitted sheets sized to the mattress, an easy-to-remove cover and a few pillows can help a day bed transition smoothly from a daytime reading spot to a welcoming place to sleep. For frequent use, a washable mattress protector can also simplify care.

What is a daybed? + -

A daybed combines a bed with sofa-like seating in one piece of furniture. Its mattress stays in place whether you’re using it for lounging during the day or sleeping at night.

How is a daybed different from a sleeper sofa? + -

A daybed keeps its mattress visible and ready to use, while a sleeper sofa typically folds out or converts to reveal a sleeping surface. Daybeds use pillows and bedding to transition between a seating area and a bed.

What is a daybed with a trundle? + -

A daybed with a trundle includes a separate sleeping platform that pulls out from beneath the main bed. Trundle designs vary, so check the frame’s specifications to understand how the lower platform works.

How do you style a daybed for daytime seating? + -

Arrange pillows along the back to create a sofa-like look, then add a few accent pillows and a folded throw. Keep the bedding neatly tucked for a tailored appearance, or layer it loosely for a more relaxed style.

What bedding do you use on a daybed? + -

A fitted sheet, top sheet and blanket or coverlet can form the foundation of daybed bedding. A daybed cover offers another styling option, with a tailored shape intended to give the bed a finished look during the day.
