Extra Bed Options

Extra bed options make it easier to welcome overnight guests without giving up valuable space every day. The right choice depends on how often the bed will be used, who will sleep on it and how much room you have available when it is open. A folding guest bed or rollaway can be a practical fit for a home that needs an occasional sleep surface and convenient storage. These beds typically fold into a slim profile that can be placed in a closet, against a wall or in another out-of-the-way area between visits. They are especially useful for hosting family during the cooler months, accommodating a friend after an evening gathering or giving children a comfortable place to sleep during a sleepover. When comparing options, consider the overall frame dimensions, folded size, mattress thickness, support system and weight capacity. Casters can make a stored bed easier to move, while a locking mechanism can help keep the frame steady when it is in use. Measure doorways, hallways and storage areas before choosing a bed, and leave enough clearance around the open frame for guests to get in and out comfortably. A portable bed may also be a thoughtful gift for someone setting up a first home, preparing a guest room or making a flexible space more welcoming for visiting relatives.

For rooms that serve more than one purpose, dual-function furniture can provide a more permanent-looking solution. A daybed can work as a sofa, reading spot or quiet place to relax during the day, then become a single sleep surface at night. A trundle bed adds another sleeping area beneath the main bed and can be pulled out when needed, making it helpful for children’s rooms, shared spaces or guests who stay occasionally. Some trundles are designed for a mattress only, while others lift to create a higher sleep surface, so check the clearance and the recommended mattress height before purchasing. A cabinet bed conceals a folding mattress inside a finished cabinet, allowing the piece to function as a console, buffet or surface for a television when closed. It can suit a living room, office or dining area where a traditional bed would feel out of place. A Murphy bed folds vertically into a wall-mounted cabinet and opens a floor area that can be used as a workspace, craft room or exercise area during the day. These options require careful attention to wall placement, ceiling height, opening clearance and installation requirements. In a smaller apartment, a sleeper sofa can offer everyday seating and convert into a bed when visitors arrive, while an air mattress can provide an affordable, highly temporary solution that inflates and stores with minimal effort. Air mattresses are convenient for short stays and occasional use, though they may not provide the same edge support, height or long-term stability as a framed bed. For any extra bed, look for a sleep surface that feels supportive, a setup process that fits your routine and materials that are easy to clean between guests.

Comfort extends beyond the frame and mattress. Fresh sheets, a washable cover, a supportive pillow and a warm blanket can make an extra bed feel considered rather than improvised, especially when a guest arrives after a long trip or during a chilly night. Explore Extra Bedding to find useful layers for preparing a welcoming sleep space. Keep frequently used items together in a labeled basket or storage bin so sheets and blankets are ready when needed. If the bed will be used by children, make sure it is appropriate for their age and size, keep the surrounding area clear and follow all safety instructions provided with the frame. Older guests may appreciate a taller sleep surface that is easier to get in and out of, while younger guests may benefit from a lower profile and sturdy guardrails where appropriate. For a dedicated guest room, prioritize everyday comfort and a bed that can remain set up. For a multipurpose room, prioritize easy conversion, compact storage and a design that complements the space when the bed is closed. During the cooler months, an extra bed can offer a comfortable retreat for visiting family, provide flexibility when household routines change or give a home office a second purpose. By matching the bed style to the available space, frequency of use and needs of the people sleeping there, you can create a dependable place to rest without making the rest of the home feel crowded.
