Helping Foster Kids and Celebrating Kid Heroes

Announcing Mattress Firm Foster Kids Program

May is National Foster Care Month, a time to raise awareness for the needs of foster children across the country. At any given time, there are more than 400,000 children in the U.S. foster care system. When I first heard that statistic, I was astounded.

Our partners at Sleep Train have long supported foster youth through their wonderful and impactful Sleep Train Foster Kids program. As we learned more about the program and the six annual drives that they host to collect essential items for these kids, we knew that this was an initiative that we wanted to adopt across MFRM Family of Brands. Through our presence in 48 states, we can bolster Sleep Train' efforts and reach even more foster youth.

Today I am proud to announce the establishment of the Mattress Firm Foster Kids program, which will strive to improve the lives of the most vulnerable in our communities.

Mattress Firm Foster Kids will host six donation drives throughout the year at our stores across the country, collecting essential items for foster kids. Items like clothing, school supplies and toys are everyday essentials that foster youth often go without. We have heard requests from our nonprofit foster care organizations for these items and we are collectively responding to that call and asking you to join us. As the number of foster kids in our communities grows, our effort to make difference in these children' lives needs to grow right alongside.

Become A Kid Hero!

Dale Suttles, president of Sunrise Children' Services, one of our nonprofit partners in Kentucky, notes that statistics show that the number of children entering foster care is on the rise, which means that community support for this vital mission is more important than ever. Our goal is to take our passion for foster kids and spread it coast-to-coast, with the help of our stores and nonprofit partners across the country. We’re challenging communities across the nation to spread the love that foster kids so desperately need.

And it' not just adults who can help foster kids get the love and care they need. Kids can make a huge impact by volunteering or helping to raise essential items and monetary donations for local nonprofit foster care organizations in their communities. In honor of National Foster Care Month and to kick off our new philanthropic initiative, we want to recognize kids out in the communities helping local foster kids through our Kid Heroes photo contest .

The winner of the Kid Heroes contest will receive a $500 Toys "R" Us gift card and a $5,000 donation will be made to the local Mattress Firm Foster Kids nonprofit partner in his or her community.

Not everyone can be a foster parent, but anyone can help a foster child. We hope that you will join us in our efforts to help foster kids beat the odds.
