Houston Mom Gets a Well-Deserved Mother's Day Surprise
This weekend, Grace Holmes of League City, TX gave her mom the ultimate Mother's Day gift: a good night's rest. After a year of perseverance and bravery in the most trying circumstances, she knew her mom deserved something special.
Grace's mother, Barbara Holmes, has been living in a camper with her husband, son and six pets since Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017. She has stayed strong to support her family, despite losing everything – from furniture to family photo albums – during the hurricane. This month, Grace's mom will finally be able to move back into the home that was destroyed – and now, she can do so, with a brand new mattress.
Grace shared her mom's story with us, as part of Mattress Firm's Ultimate Mother's Day Contest. Her entry read:
My mom deserves to win because after nine months of waiting for construction to be done and living in a camper in her front yard, she and the rest of my family are almost able to move back into their home that was completely flooded from floor to roof during Hurricane Harvey. My family moved to Texas from Illinois just six days before Harvey. They weren't even fully unpacked when the storm hit; they lost everything. They were denied housing assistance with FEMA stating that they weren't technically occupying the house because they didn't have TX drivers licenses yet. Because of the denial of assistance, they had to buy a camper, which now both my parents, brother and six pets currently live in. My mother has been so strong and patient through the whole rebuild process, despite having to constantly deal with insurance companies, contractors, finish dates being pushed further and further away, and not having the most comfortable or stable living situation. She continues to work hard to support our family and stay strong for everyone around her, including the neighbors who are going through the same thing. My mother deserves to have a comfortable new mattress to sleep on in her new house to finally give her a place to rest and relax and be at peace.
We were so lucky to be part of Barbara's story and to have the opportunity to reward her sacrifice with something that will help her rest a little easier in her new home.
Happy Mother's Day – to Barbara and all of the deserving moms out there!
