A mattress protector is a simple layer that helps keep your mattress cleaner, fresher and more comfortable through everyday life. It sits beneath your fitted sheet, creating a barrier between your sleep surface and common sources of wear such as perspiration, skin oils, crumbs, dust and accidental spills. The right protector can help preserve the feel of your mattress while making routine care easier, especially during the cooler months when windows may stay closed and bedding gets more use. Look for a style that matches the way you sleep and the needs of your household. A waterproof mattress protector is a practical choice for children, pets, guests and anyone who enjoys breakfast in bed, while a water-resistant option may be enough for sleepers who mainly want help with normal moisture and surface debris. If you tend to sleep warm, focus on breathable fabrics and lightweight construction that allow air to move without adding noticeable heat. Cotton, Tencel™ and other moisture-managing materials can create a smoother, more comfortable feel, while a quiet waterproof barrier helps protect against spills without the crinkling sound associated with some older designs. Sensitivity to dust or seasonal allergens may also influence your choice. A closely woven protector can help limit the buildup of particles on the mattress, giving you one more manageable part of a regular bedroom-cleaning routine. For a seasonal bedding refresh, explore Summer Mattress Protectors for lighter options that can remain useful whenever the bedroom feels warm.

Fit matters just as much as fabric and protection. Check the mattress size and measure its height, including any pillow top, Euro top or mattress topper that will remain on the bed. A protector that is too shallow may pull loose at the corners, while one with generous depth can stay more securely in place as you move during sleep. Fitted-sheet-style protectors are convenient for everyday use because they are generally easy to remove and wash, making them a helpful choice for primary bedrooms, children’s rooms and guest beds. Full encasements surround the top, bottom and sides of the mattress and close around it, offering more comprehensive coverage for households managing significant allergy concerns or seeking an added layer of defense against bed bugs. Always follow the care label, and wash the protector regularly based on its use, household needs and the manufacturer’s instructions. A monthly wash can be a useful starting point for many homes, while a protector used by a child, pet or sleeper with frequent spills may need attention more often. Use a gentle cycle when recommended, avoid harsh treatments that could affect the waterproof layer and make sure the protector is fully dry before placing it back on the bed. Mattress protectors also make thoughtful gifts for new homeowners, college students, parents preparing a nursery, children moving into a bigger bed or anyone investing in a new mattress. They are practical without being impersonal, especially when paired with fresh sheets or other bedding, and they help protect the comfort and support someone relies on night after night. With the right fit, feel and level of coverage, a mattress protector can quietly support better bedroom hygiene and help your mattress stay welcoming for years to come. We make sleep easy™ by helping you choose protection that fits naturally into your routine.

A mattress protector is a removable layer that rests over your mattress and beneath your fitted sheet. Protectors are available in different materials, including cotton, polyester, bamboo-derived fabrics and waterproof designs.

What materials are mattress protectors made from? + -

Common materials include cotton, polyester, rayon made from bamboo and blends of these fabrics. The top layer may be quilted, smooth or padded depending on the design.

What is the difference between a waterproof and quilted mattress protector? + -

A waterproof mattress protector includes a moisture-resistant layer, while a quilted protector features stitched padding or fabric layers for a different texture and feel. Some protectors combine both features.

How should I wash a mattress protector? + -

Follow the care instructions on the product label. Many protectors can be machine washed with mild detergent and tumble dried on a low setting, while some require specific washing or drying instructions.

How does a mattress protector fit on a mattress? + -

Most mattress protectors use fitted corners, elastic edges or a stretchable skirt that wraps around the mattress. Choose a design with the construction and depth range that matches your mattress.
