Shopping for a full size firm mattress this Black Friday is an opportunity to focus on the support, comfort and space you need for better rest. A standard full mattress measures approximately 54 inches wide by 75 inches long, offering more room to stretch out than a twin while fitting comfortably in many smaller bedrooms and guest rooms. A firm feel generally provides less sinkage than a plush surface, which may appeal to back and stomach sleepers who prefer to rest more on top of their mattress. However, firmness and support are not the same thing: The right mattress should support your body while providing enough cushioning for your preferred sleep position. Your body weight, comfort preferences and whether you change positions overnight all influence how firm a mattress feels. As you compare full size firm mattresses, consider both the dimensions of your room and the usable sleep space you need, especially if you share your bed. Choosing among firm memory foam, innerspring and hybrid mattresses can help narrow your Black Friday mattress search. Memory foam can provide contouring with a firmer overall feel, while innerspring designs typically offer a more responsive surface. Hybrid mattresses combine coils with comfort layers, though their cushioning, bounce and firmness vary by model. Look closely at the features that matter to your routine, such as edge support if you sit along the side of the bed or motion isolation if a partner’s movements interrupt your sleep. If you tend to sleep warm, compare the construction and cooling features listed for each mattress rather than assuming every firm mattress sleeps the same. Before choosing a full size mattress, check its height, foundation requirements and compatibility with your existing bed frame or adjustable base. Mattress Firm’s Sleep Experts® can help you understand these differences and compare options, making it easier to choose a firm full mattress that fits your comfort preferences and budget beyond Black Friday.

What does firm mean when describing a mattress? + -

A firm mattress typically has a less yielding surface with less initial sink than a plush mattress. Firmness describes how the mattress feels, not its quality or construction. A firm mattress can still have cushioning at the surface.

How do firm foam and firm hybrid mattresses differ? + -

Firm foam mattresses use foam layers throughout, while firm hybrid mattresses combine foam or latex comfort layers with a coil system. Foam often has a more contouring feel, while hybrids typically have more bounce. The exact feel depends on the materials and construction.

Can a firm mattress have a pillow top? + -

Yes. A pillow top adds a layer of cushioning above the main mattress construction, but the mattress beneath it can still feel firm. When comparing options, consider both the initial surface softness and the overall feel rather than relying on the pillow-top label alone.

Is mattress firmness rated the same way across brands? + -

No. Firmness labels and numerical scales can vary by brand, so two mattresses labeled firm may feel noticeably different. Read each brand’s firmness description and, when possible, try mattresses in person to get a clearer sense of their feel.

What should I compare when browsing firm mattresses on Black Friday? + -

Compare construction, comfort-layer materials, surface cushioning and firmness descriptions. Cover materials and care instructions can also help distinguish options. Creating a short list of your preferred features before Black Friday can make browsing more focused.
