Bedding For Bed Bugs

Choosing the right bedding for bed bugs can help limit hiding places and make an infestation easier to identify and manage. Start with tightly woven, light-colored sheets, blankets and duvet covers that can be washed and dried on high heat according to the care label. A bed bug mattress encasement and box spring encasement with secure, reinforced zippers can cover common seams and crevices where bed bugs may hide, while also making future inspections simpler. Look for bed bug–proof mattress covers specifically designed to prevent bed bugs from entering or escaping, and select a properly fitted encasement that fully surrounds the mattress without tears or gaps. Keep bedding from touching the floor, walls or nearby furniture, and avoid storing extra blankets, pillows or clothing beneath the bed. Wash bedding regularly during bed bug treatment, placing sheets, pillowcases, comforters and washable blankets directly into sealed bags before moving them to the laundry area to reduce the risk of spreading bed bugs. Use the hottest dryer setting that is safe for each item and follow the product care instructions, since washing alone may not eliminate every bed bug or egg. Items that cannot be laundered may require professional treatment or secure isolation, depending on the material and the severity of the infestation. Bedding changes can support a broader bed bug control plan, but clean sheets and a new mattress will not resolve an infestation on their own.
